Why August can offer a rare opportunity to notice what gets overlooked during a busy year.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!August has a different feel to the rest of the year.
The roads can be quieter, diaries may become a little less crowded and routines often shift. Even for those who are still working, there can be a sense that life is moving at a slightly different pace.
That change can be valuable.
When life is busy, we often focus on what needs to be done next. Work, family, appointments and everyday responsibilities take priority, while our own health and wellbeing can quietly move further down the list.
A slower summer moment can create space to notice what has been overlooked.
The Things We Only Notice When Life Slows Down
Sometimes it is only when we stop rushing that we realise how tired we are.
Or that we have been sleeping badly.
Or that we have not made time for exercise, fresh air, friends or simply doing very little.
None of these things necessarily require a dramatic solution. Often, the first useful step is simply noticing them.
A walk, a quiet afternoon, an earlier night or a day without a full schedule can feel surprisingly restorative.
Wellbeing is not always about adding more to our lives. Sometimes it is about creating a little less.
What Have You Been Putting Off?
Most of us have something we have been meaning to deal with.
It might be a routine appointment, a question we have been meaning to ask a healthcare professional, a change in our daily habits, or something we have simply not found time to think about properly.
August can provide a natural moment to catch up — not by creating another long to-do list, but by asking a simple question:
Is there anything relating to my health or wellbeing that I have been putting off because life has been too busy?
Sometimes just identifying that one thing is enough to make the next step easier.
Wellbeing Is Not Another Task
There can be a tendency to turn wellbeing into another project.
More exercise. Better sleep. Healthier food. More mindfulness. More organisation.
But looking after ourselves should not always feel like work.
For some people, wellbeing might mean going for a swim. For others, it could be having lunch with a friend, sitting outside with a book, cooking something enjoyable or simply spending a morning without rushing.
There is no single version of “doing wellbeing properly”.
The useful question is simply: what helps you feel more like yourself?
A Natural Point to Reset
September often brings structure back very quickly.
Schools return, diaries fill, work becomes busier and the rhythm of autumn begins.
That makes the end of summer a natural point to reflect.
Are there routines you want to return to?
Anything you want to do differently?
Something you want to make a little more time for?
The answers do not need to be ambitious. Small changes are often the ones that are easiest to keep.
Health and Wellbeing in Our Community
At The Dolphin Medical & Therapy Rooms in Ware, Hertfordshire, we see how many different forms looking after our health can take.
The independent healthcare professionals who work from our rooms support people in a variety of ways, reflecting the fact that our needs can change at different stages of life.
Sometimes looking after ourselves means seeking specialist advice. Sometimes it means addressing something we have been putting off. And sometimes it simply means giving ourselves permission to pause.
However you are spending August, we hope you find a little time to enjoy the season and look after yourself in whatever way feels right for you.
